Notes:
The publication of Roberts Austen's diagram provoked many other scientists to work at the same subject. One of these scientists was Bakhuis Roozeboom. Much of his knowledge was obtained by studying the behaviour of different salt mixtures. He came to the conclusion that during solidification, not pure iron crystals were formed, but carbon containing crystals, which he called Martensite. The carbon content of these iron crystals had to increase with decreasing formation temperatures. Therefore, he added his important but still theoretical line ab to Roberts Austen's diagram.
Another line was added to the diagram, which would be very controversial for the next 5 to 10 years: EH. With this line, Bakhuis Roozeboom tried to explain the formation of cementite in high carbon alloys. In his view,it was possible that graphite could combine with iron to form iron-carbide. This reaction was supposed to occur within the region aBC-EH.
